Design at Compass

At Compass, we envision a world where the experience of selling or buying a home is simple and pleasant for everyone. Founded in 2012, Compass provides an end-to-end platform that empowers residential real estate agents to deliver exceptional service to their seller and buyer clients, all in service of our mission to help everyone find their place in the world.

About the role

Design leaders at Compass are responsible for crafting and driving a vision for superior customer experiences. We lead initiatives throughout the strategic planning, research, design, and development lifecycle—partnering closely with multi-disciplinary teams to bring new products to life and continuously enhance our existing ones. We strive to deeply understand the needs of our customers and drive purposeful and delightful outcomes.

We’re looking for a talented and experienced mobile design leader to coach and manage a growing team responsible for our cross-platform experiences. Designers on this team work across the full suite of our enterprise offerings that are core to real estate transactions, with an emphasis on team and client communication and collaboration. Our mobile platforms play a crucial role supporting the success of real estate agents to build and maintain their business by always being prepared and productive.

It’s an exciting role where you'll have an opportunity to help shape our experience strategy and workflows, foster agile and design thinking processes, and coach a growing team of talented product designers across our organization to hone their craft.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for an experienced design leader with an established record of concepting, building, and launching successful applications across multiple platforms. You have a passion for listening to customers and identifying opportunities to inspire and delight them. You’re able to comfortably promote and practice a lean user-centered design process—as we move fast!

You’re a systems thinking designer who looks to quantitative and qualitative data to iteratively improve and can strategically partner with cross-discipline leads to shape and steward our customer experiences. You work collaboratively across product, research, and engineering teams to define and synthesize complex feature requirements, and support product roadmap and project planning.

You will lead and facilitate product ideation and creative solutions to meet strategic needs via workshops or design thinking sessions. Our ideal candidate is well-versed and practiced in speaking to audiences of any size, whether it’s for a workshop to a large team or an executive presentation to key stakeholders for a strategic design review.

As a manager, you’ve a proven ability to coach and direct designers to produce thoughtful, high-quality deliverables and support efficient development workflows. You have pixel-perfect standards with exceptional interaction design skills and an eye for accessibility and usability. You enjoy seeing designers mature and are comfortable with creating career development plans for them to grow.

You’re persuasive and are able to change the way people think in sensitive situations. You understand that getting people to see your side of things while protecting  relationships is key to gaining acceptance and affecting change. Above all, you’re an advocate for consistency with enough flexibility to accommodate critique and change.

What you get to do every day:

  • Shape and guide alignment on a NorthStar vision for our mobile platforms
  • Exhibit an autonomous mastery of craft and influence best practices
  • Coach, manage, and hire designers with different skill sets and technical areas of expertise
  • Establish operational processes and mechanisms to support successful cross-disciplinary team partnership and coordination.
  • Develop and grow subject matter expertise of the Real Estate space
  • Lead development and execution of a cross-platform UX strategy
  • Be accountable for defining and meeting high-level key metrics and user experience measures
  • Lead in simplifying complex concepts and quickly turn around in-depth user flows and mockups reflecting a range of concepts/models
  • Demonstrate ownership for the end-to-end customer experiences
  • Exemplify excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills (up, down and across levels and disciplines)
  • Lead, facilitate and coach cross-functional collaboration and ideation
  • Identify opportunities to develop and leverage research and data insights as second nature in framing problems and driving decisions
  • Demonstrate skills and confidence in weighing risk and making fast decisions - know when to release quickly and when to “measure twice”

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years experience in product design
  • 5-7 years experience managing product designers
  • Experience designing and iterating on mobile experiences leading to a higher quality and more consistent product design
  • Excellent written communication and compelling presentation style that helps you get buy-in for your ideas
  • Deep experience working within a technical, agile environment
  • Comfort with a fast-paced work environment at a rapidly evolving organization
