Design at Compass

At Compass, we envision a world where the experience of selling or buying a home is simple and pleasant for everyone. Founded in 2012, Compass provides an end-to-end platform that empowers residential real estate agents to deliver exceptional service to their seller and buyer clients, all in service of our mission to help everyone find their place in the world.

About the role

Design leaders at Compass are responsible for crafting and driving a vision for superior customer experiences. We lead initiatives throughout the strategic planning, research, design, and development lifecycle—partnering closely with multi-disciplinary teams to bring new products to life and continuously enhance our existing ones. We strive to deeply understand the needs of our customers and drive purposeful and delightful outcomes.

We’re looking for an experienced Design Systems leader to coach and lead a growing team responsible for steadily evolving our product design language, patterns, guidelines, and cross-platform component libraries. Designers on this team work across multiple platforms to support productivity workflows, conversation mechanisms, data visualizations, and search experiences. Our design systems play an essential role supporting the success of our development teams to think big, be solutions driven, and move fast to ensure our customers are alway prepared and productive.

It’s a key leadership role where you'll have an opportunity to influence how we design at Compass, including all aspects of our work from tooling and operational processes to internal governance and collaboration models.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for a design leader with established experience maintaining and evolving an enterprise level design system across multiple platforms. You’re a master evangelist for design systems, ways of working, practiced in mobile patterns, and meeting accessibility standards.

You’re a deep systems thinker who looks to quantitative and qualitative data to analyze and continuously improve our operational processes and mechanisms with teams to enhance our product development cycles. You’re comfortable partnering with cross-discipline leads to shape and steward our strategic thinking and planning—having a keen sense for staying one step ahead of our feature team roadmaps.

You will lead and facilitate workshops and design thinking sessions across the design and engineering organization to craft and document patterns, components, and guidelines across existing and emerging platforms. Our ideal candidate is well-versed and practiced in speaking to audiences of any size, whether it’s for a workshop to a large team or an executive presentation to key stakeholders for a strategic review.

As a manager, you’ve a proven ability to coach and direct designers to produce thoughtful, high-quality deliverables from guidelines documentation to motion, IA, and beyond. You have pixel-perfect standards with exceptional interaction design skills and an eye for accessibility and usability. You enjoy seeing designers mature and are comfortable with creating career development plans for them to grow.

You’re persuasive and are able to change the way people think in sensitive situations. You understand that getting people to see your side of things while protecting  relationships is key to gaining acceptance and affecting change. Above all, you’re an advocate for consistency with enough flexibility to accommodate critique and change.

What you get to do every day:

  • Shape and guide alignment on a NorthStar vision for our design system
  • Exhibit autonomous mastery across multiple creative practices and influence best practices
  • Coach, manage, and hire designers with different skill sets and technical areas of expertise
  • Establish operational processes and mechanisms to support successful cross-disciplinary team partnership and coordination.
  • Develop and grow subject matter expertise of the Real Estate space
  • Drive adoption and optimization of our patterns, guidelines, and components
  • Be accountable for defining and meeting high-level key metrics and user experience measures across our platforms
  • Lead, facilitate and coach cross-functional collaboration and ideation
  • Exemplify excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills (up, down and across levels and disciplines)
  • Closely collaborate with front-end and UX engineers to continuously raise the bar on the quality of our customer and client experiences
  • Demonstrate skills and confidence in weighing risk and making fast decisions - know when to release quickly and when to “measure twice”

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years experience and proven track record in product design
  • 5-7 years experience managing product designers
  • Experience designing and iterating on design systems and mobile experiences leading to a higher quality and more consistent product design
  • Excellent written communication and compelling presentation style that helps you get buy-in for your ideas
  • Deep experience working within a technical, agile environment
  • Comfort with a fast-paced work environment at a rapidly evolving organization
