The building was originally built in 1890 for the Long Island Business College and is likely the design of James W. Naughton, the Superintendent of Buildings for the Board of Education of Brooklyn in the late 19th century. It dates from approximately the same time Naughton was working on his masterpiece, the Boys High School in Bedford Stuyvesant (you may recognize it as the set of the recent television series "The Knick"). Like that building, this one is in the Romanesque Revival style, with arches a-plenty in the upper story windows and front door, and the characteristic massing of shapes. Naughton uses brick and terra-cotta in his usual masterful way; the three towers of the façade draw the eye upward, a great use of vertical elements.
Tucked away on a quiet street in Williamsburg, this home is just a couple of blocks to the J, M and Z trains at Marcy avenue, and a short distance to the waterfront Ferry connecting to lower manhattan, DUMBO, and Long Island City.
