I’ve heard a lot of people saying they need to “get out of here.”
My Mom has always fixed things by moving. I remember one time, she was telling me that she needed to move somewhere in the country because she would be happy there. By then, I had been to enough therapy to understand that a place can’t make you happy. Only YOU can make YOU happy. I said, “Mom, guess who’s going to be there when you get there?” She said, “Who?” My answer was, “You, you will be there.”
Recently, I was fortunate to get out of the Houston heat and enjoy the crisp Colorado weather for a few days. They were spent without my usual distractions. I hiked, biked and hiked some more! It was just me and the trees, streams, mountains and nature. The flowers were the most beautiful colors and were naturally happy where they were planted.
After flying on 2 planes and hiking to the top of a Colorado mountain, I bet you can’t guess who was there, waiting for me at the top and then again at the bottom of my hikes?
Yep, I hadn’t seen myself in a while. I hadn’t asked myself how I was doing, what I was wanting to accomplish over the next 3 years, if I needed anything or if there was anything that I could do for myself. Those questions are usually saved for the people around me. I couldn’t remember the last time I checked on ME. When I think about it, one person that I probably need to spend more time with is myself. A therapist once told me that I was never alone, I was with myself.
If you think spending time with a stranger is uncomfortable, take some time to be with yourself. Chances are that it will feel as if you are spending it with a stranger. It can be uncomfortable, bring up things you would rather not think about and make you realize that you deserve the attention, care and comforting that you give to everyone else in your life. So, go grab your “table for one” and treat yourself to a delicious meal and one-on-one attention from YOU!
