I'm such a cry baby! Turns out, this may be part of the reason that I haven’t gotten the Coronavirus. When I would cry as a child, my dad would say that if I wanted something to cry about, he would give me something worth crying over. That is code for “your feelings have no validity.” So loving and understanding, I know!
Once I was old enough to understand how ridiculous that is, I gave myself permission to cry for any damn reason I felt like. Tears of joy, surprise, sorrow, defeat, victory, love and appreciation to name a few. Don’t be surprised if you and your loved ones are finding themselves in tears more often than pre-Covid19.
Instead of looking at this as “doing worse,” consider that it may just be the thing keeping you happy and healthy. Just like exercise is good for your body and mind, turns out that crying is also good for you! Did you know that stress hormones are found in tears, and so crying literally releases pent-up emotional stress? Crying also lowers cortisol levels and can protect you from getting sick. So, use this as my permission to feel your feelings and for goodness sakes, if there was ever a perfect time to “ugly cry,” it is during quarantine!
