| | "Winter is coming." This famous quote from Game of Thrones may apply to us this winter! According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), "During the October-December 2026 season, there is a 75% chance of a historic event that would exceed the strength of previous El Nino events dating back to 1950."
While a record breaking El Nino season is not a guarantee of record rain, it pays to be ready. Here are your tips/reminders for prepping your home for what may (or may not!) be a doozy of a winter:
Clear your roof of tree debris and trim trees and bushes away from your roof and siding. Not only does this encourage the free flow of rain off of your roof, but it also helps extend the life of your roof and siding. Clean out your gutters, or better yet, install gutter guards. Overflowing gutters can send water into places it isn't supposed to go, potentially leading to other problems. Clear downspouts and drains (including underground French drains) to prevent clogs and minimize puddling. If you use downspout extenders, now is the time to put those on. And if the storm drain at the street appears to be clogged, call public works now. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If you have not already done so, please upgrade any old 9V battery-style detectors to the much better 10-year detectors. Replace your furnace filter (note: PG&E provides free furnace inspections and pilot light relighting services). Check your outdoor lights for burned out bulbs. Outdoor lighting may not be critical when it is getting dark around 8pm, but as that shifts towards 5pm, it becomes more important. If you have outdoor furniture, very soon it will time to put away the cushions, pillows, etc. If you have a BBQ cover, it's almost time to put that to good use, too.
