HOW MANY FLOWERS ARE PRODUCED FOR VALENTINE’S DAY?

250 million, according to the Society of American Florists—with red roses making up nearly two-thirds of that number. In terms of spending, Americans spent an average of about $186 on Valentine’s Day gifts last year, totaling approximately $2 billion nationwide!

I would like to spend some money on you! So, I’m bringing back my annual offer: dinner for you and a guest at the world-famous Le Bernardin for any referrals (buyers or sellers) that lead to a closed sale in 2025!

My team and I helped 84 clients buy or sell a home in NYC during 2024, and our goal is to assist 100 this year! I would love to help you, your friends, your family, or your colleagues with their real estate needs—and as a thank-you, send you and a guest to an incredible dining experience at Le Bernardin (or another restaurant of your choice)!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Best,

Michael

A first look at NYBG's transportive Orchid Show that takes on Mexican Modernism this spring

The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism is open from February 15-April 27

Need a vacation? Head to The Bronx for The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism at New York Botanical Garden. The sprawling floral exhibition, with its vibrant colors, flowing waterfalls and thousands of orchids, makes for a transportive tropical escape.

This year's show, presented in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, was inspired by the art of the Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragán. Throughout your floral adventure, you'll learn about the late artist's ethos as you stroll through meditative spaces, explore minimalist designs and notice contrasting details. The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism is open from February 15-April 27. Don't miss Orchid Nights, 21+ events on select nights that feature cumbia music, dancing, and drinks.

Quite presciently, Barragán envisioned gardens of magical places for peace and contemplation—necessary for the well-being of busy urban dwellers. New York Botanical Garden brings his vision to life for New Yorkers, offering quiet, cozy corners for reflection throughout the show.

Legendary art installation ‘The Gates’ returns (digitally) to Central Park

Thousands of 16-foot-tall orange gates lined Central Park's pathways for 16 days in February 2005. The momentous public art installation known as "The Gates" was stunning in its size and simplicity. For many viewers, it celebrated the park, the city and the persistence of joy — despite the fact that the installation was on display in the depths of winter as New York continued to heal from the 9/11 attacks.

To mark the ephemeral exhibit's 20th anniversary, the Shed at Hudson Yards will host a retrospective on "The Gates" through March 23, with an accompanying digital recreation via augmented reality. Both are free.

The retrospective, which is titled “Christo and Jeanne-Claude: The Gates and Unrealized Projects for New York City,” features scale models of the installation as well as materials. It also displays videos of the pair behind the installation — married couple Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon — fighting with community boards for permission to stage the exhibit. Additionally, there are photographs, drawings and a gallery of similarly ambitious, but unrealized proposals by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Meanwhile, “The Gates: An Augmented Reality Experience” enables Central Park visitors to better experience what the exhibition looked like 20 years ago. Various QR-code equipped kiosks throughout the park allow app users to scan and see "The Gates" through the lens of their phones. The exhibition and app are supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Michael Bloomberg’s charitable organization, in partnership with the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, the Shed, the Central Park Conservancy and the city's parks department. (Bloomberg was mayor in 2005 and worked to greenlight "The Gates.")

A Titanic Exhibition With Recovered Artifacts Returns To The NYC Area This Week

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition will set sail for the Liberty Science Center, and it's bringing 100+ real artifacts along for the journey

“TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition” is docking at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City beginning Friday, February 15th.

This exhibit — a repeat visitor in the NYC area — transfers visitors back to 1912. Though the immersive environment that recreates the ship’s rooms is certainly engaging and true-to-life, the real draw of the display is the collection of 130+ authentic artifacts that were recovered from the Titanic’s wreckage: champagne bottles, jewelry, chandeliers, and most notably, the ship’s logometer, which was used to track the distance traveled each day. Chillingly, it is still showing the reading from the night it sank.

“A seminal moment in world history, people continue to be amazed more than a century later by the story of the Titanic’s ill-fated journey to New York City,” said Paul Hoffman, president and CEO of Liberty Science Center. “Visitors can take in the majestic nature of the ship, learn the science behind why it sank, and discover exactly how the artifacts have been recovered and preserved for all this time.

Despite the years that have passed since this historic tragedy, the interest in the story remains relevant. One of our go-to science museums hopes that visitors will take away the resilience from the people on the ship, as well as the cultures and livelihoods that the Titanic brought together.
