While the iconic Painted Ladies of Alamo Square (those gorgeous Victorian homes in a row) were built in the late 1800s, it wasn’t until the 1970s that the city began to actively protect and celebrate them as historic treasures.

On April 24, 1971, the city of San Francisco officially designated Alamo Square and its famous row of colorful houses as a historic district, recognizing their unique architecture and cultural charm. These homes became emblematic of San Francisco’s quirky beauty and Victorian legacy.

Today, they’re one of the city’s most photographed spots—especially with that postcard-perfect backdrop of the skyline. You might also recognize them from the opening of Full House!
