Will new zoning make housing more affordable in Cambridge?
In a historic move, the Cambridge City Council voted on February 10 to enact sweeping zoning reform. The changes, which seek to raise housing density and affordability, eliminate single-family zoning, drastically reduce set-back requirements, and allow for much larger structures, while at the same time removing parking requirements and scrapping neighborhood review. Though the reform may be a step in the right direction toward solving the housing crisis, the question remains: Will it really make housing more affordable? And will it really benefit our city?
