While we think of October as a time for cooler temperatures, pumpkin patches and scary costumes, October is also known for fire prevention month. More specifically, national Fire Prevention Week, which takes place every year during the week of October 9th, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871. This year, Fire Prevention Week is October 5th through 11th. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire. |

National Fire Prevention Association - NFPA.org - On this site, you’ll find loads of educational resources to make sure that every person knows what to do in case of a fire. They have everything from apps to videos to printables and much more, to make sure you have the resources you need to keep your family, your community, and your city safe. This year's theme is "Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home." The theme works to educate everyone about how important it is to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries. Check it out HERE!
New Battery Recycling Drop-Off in The Woodlands - Starting October 5, a new household battery recycling program will be starting at the Central Fire Station, 9951 Grogan’s Mill Road. Residents can safely drop off used household batteries weighing less than 11 pounds (no automotive or car batteries). This program aims to provide the community with a safe and convenient way to dispose of batteries that could otherwise pose a fire risk. For more information on battery recycling, please contact The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800 or visit call2recycle.org.

| | Check with your local fire department or ESD about open houses, station tours, or safety demonstrations during Fire Prevention Week. Test your smoke alarms this Sunday — and remind your children how to escape. Many house fires start in the kitchen - consider a fire blanket such as Prepared Hero to keep within easy reach. Clean dryer vents regularly, keep flues and chimneys swept, inspect wiring, especially if you have pets that may chew.
