redevelopment of loretto heights national register of historic places
sitting on one of denver's highest points
opened in 1891 + was designed by denver architect frank e. edbrooke with stunning walls of red sandstone, 86 room romanesque style building a place of living and teaching: the site on a hilltop in southwest denver served as a convent and school operated by the sisters. established by mother pancratia bonfils. cemetery for nuns: the sisters of loretto operated a private cemetery on the campus from 1898 to 1969. 62 sisters of loretto were buried in the loretto heights cemetery, including those who founded the school. in 2022, due to the redevelopment of the campus, the remains of the 62 sisters were exhumed and moved to mount olivet cemetery in wheat ridge to join other sisters of loretto. transition to college: the school evolved from an academy into loretto heights college, a four-year women's college, which the sisters operated until 1988. while the campus was sold to developers in 2018, the main historic buildings, including those used by the sisters, remain
