One of the benefits of working in real estate is that we get to see the latest trends as they are starting to proliferate. While common today, it wasn't that long ago that learning thermostats, smart security systems and even built-in espresso machines were bleeding edge technologies that drew oohs and ahhs! Today, they are relatively commonplace (though espresso machines still draw oohs and ahhs!).
So, what does the future hold? Well, if you are contemplating remodeling your kitchen and want to magically increase your counter space and become the envy of your friends, then we have a sexy and practical kitchen innovation for you! What if, in the above picture, you could cook directly on the island with no visible burners to break up the clean island surface? Your entire kitchen island (or countertop) could be used for food prep, entertainment or even homework when not cooking - and cleanup would be a breeze!
What is this magical technology? It is actually just a clever evolution of the cooktop technology we have and love in our own kitchen - induction. With an induction cooktop, magnetic induction (vs. gas burners or electric coils) is used to heat compatible pots and pans and cook your food. The clever evolution here is that the induction elements are located under the countertop effectively making them invisible and, viola, increasing counter space!
There are a number of companies that install invisible cooktops, but if you are interested in learning more, I found Invisacook to provide a clear and concise explanation of how they work along with their installation requirements and limitations.
But what if you can't live without your gas cooktop? PITT Cooking has a similar product with the gas burners integrated into the countertop. This results in a similarly clean looking countertop/cooktop hybrid, though the heating elements remain ever present. Having seen it recently, it is definitely an eye-catching look!
With the proliferation of kitchen gadgets (we just added a Ninja Creami Deluxe - which we love!), counter space is forever at a premium. Adding an invisible cooktop during your next remodel could allow you to reclaim valuable counter space in your existing kitchen footprint...and make you the envy of the neighborhood.
