We're living in a time, where everything NEW sems to be preferred to everything OLD. Yet, humans are not wired like that. We actually LOVE what's familiar to us, we're drawn to the familiar; I always found that fascinating. While everything NEW is a challenge for us that makes us grow, it makes sense to cherish, appreciate and care for the OLD, its style, beauty and value. I have always been a huge fan of antique furniture, and spellbound by historic buildings - built at a time when people still cared about making buildings beautiful and functional. Let alone ART, that never gets "old"... Repurposing the things you have and love, instead of throwing them away and buying something new, is an option, and it is sustainable environmentally. If you want to play an important role in reducing the excessive waste and landfill on this planet, not to mention the tons of junk landing at the bottom of the ocean that is seeping into our seafood supply, you can simply do your best to repurpose furniture. Did you know that each year Americans throw out more than 12 million tons of furniture, creating mountains of solid waste that has grown 450% since 1960? Now you do. So what can you do about it? Wash your curtains, reupholster chairs or a couch with a new sassy fabric, give that wooden armoire or book shelf a new coat of paint, dye your table cloths, or simply have your rugs dry cleaned instead of throwing them away. Re-arranging your furniture or paint the walls of your kitchen, bathroom, hallway can create a whole new atmosphere. It will be a creative fest of the senses that will please your eyes, heart and conscience. |
