Founder & Executive Chairman
Prior to Compass Ori was the Director of Engineering at Twitter's NYC office, after selling his prior company, Julpan, to Twitter in 2011. Previously, Google acquired his patented thesis work called Orion. During his time at Google, Ori led a search quality team that integrated the Orion technology and algorithms with the Google search engine. Ori earned his PhD in computer science at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
Founder & CEO
Robert Reffkin is an entrepreneur on a mission to help everyone find their place in the world. He was inspired to enter the world of real estate by his mother, Ruth, a longtime agent who now proudly works at Compass. After completing Columbia University in less than 3 years, Robert worked at McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, and as a Fellow in the White House before returning to Columbia for his MBA. He ran 50 marathons in 50 states to raise $1 million dollars for charities — including for New York Needs You, the non-profit he founded to serve young people living below the poverty line who are the first in their families to go to college. Robert lives in Tribeca with his wife Benis and their two (soon-to-be three!) children.
Chief Operating Officer
As Chief Operating Officer, Maëlle oversees technology, product, marketing, and other corporate functions and is responsible for the execution of the company’s strategic priorities. Most recently, Maëlle oversaw global operations at The Priceline Group where she was tasked with driving the company's strategy and integrating its six major brands. Prior to The Priceline Group, she was the Chief Executive Officer of Russia's largest e-commerce site and a principal at The Boston Consulting Group. Maëlle has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, one of Fortune's 40 Under 40 and one of the Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company. A native of France, Maëlle holds degrees from The Sorbonne and Sciences Po.
Chief Financial Officer
Kristen has nearly 20 years of global experience across the technology and media sectors, with expertise in software and tech-enabled services. As Chief Financial Officer, she oversees strategic and operational finance, acquisitions, investor relations, and the new development and legal teams. Prior to joining Compass, Kristen spent nearly 12 years at The Carlyle Group where she led technology investments for Carlyle’s $18.5 billion fund and oversaw the firm’s investments in a number of premier technology companies around the world. Prior to Carlyle, Kristen worked at Goldman Sachs in the Investment Banking Division where she focused on technology, media and communications transactions. Kristen holds a BA in Economics from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Chief Technology Officer
Joseph is a technologist with a passion for AI. As Chief Technology Officer, he leads the development of the real estate industry’s first end-to-end platform and oversees the engineering team. Most recently, Joseph served as Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer for AI. During his tenure, he held product and engineering responsibility for all enterprise database, big data and machine learning products, with 1,700+ engineers. Prior to Microsoft, Joseph spent nine years as a VP at Amazon where he managed the Global Inventory Platform for Amazon’s Consumer Business, and built the machine learning and Transaction Risk Management teams. Joseph holds a PhD in Neural Networks from the University of Texas at Austin.
Head of Product
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Eytan began his career as a Product Manager at Microsoft where he helped build their first-ever CRM, which was initially designed for real estate agents. He also served as the product manager for their search engine. He later co-founded a venture capital-backed startup called Oyster.com and led the product team there before the company was sold to TripAdvisor in 2013. He most recently served as a Vice President and General Manager of TripAdvisor, leading a 50-person team of product managers, engineers and operations team members. Eytan lives in Dobbs Ferry, New York with his wife and 3 children.
Chief Marketing Officer
Khurrum joins Compass from Spotify where he was most recently the Global Director of Product Marketing. At Spotify, Khurrum was responsible for the company’s global product marketing strategy and execution with a focus on monetization and consumer behavior. Prior to his work at Spotify, Khurrum spent 3 years in senior marketing roles at Facebook, and previous to that was CMO at eXelate (a Nielsen company). He has also spent time in marketing leadership roles at comScore, Microsoft, and Sprint. Khurrum received his MBA, MS, and BA from the University of Virginia. He lives in NJ, with his wife and 3 sons. Khurrum is a huge music fan, and you can find LCD Soundsystem and Pearl Jam on his Spotify playlist.
Chief People Officer
Madan is an engineer by training, who transitioned into HR and received his Master’s Degree in Human Resources at the London School of Economics. He was most recently the Chief People Officer at Outcome Health, one of the fastest growing healthcare technology firms focused on health information and intelligence across physician practices and hospital systems. Prior to Outcome Health, Madan spent 6 years at Facebook, and served in various roles including head of HR for the Asia-Pacific region, head of HR for Facebook’s global sales organization, and head of HR for Facebook NY. Madan also led Amazon’s expansion into Asia, leading a 100+ person HR team. Madan lives in Scarsdale with his wife and children. He is an avid reader who practices yoga and meditation.
Head of Talent
Prior to Compass Margaret was a founding member of Rich Talent Group, a leading SF-based executive search and advisory firm focused on consumer growth technology companies. During her 4 years at RTG, Margaret successfully built executive leadership teams at companies including Airbnb, Dropbox, Etsy, Eventbrite, Warby Parker, Uber, and Zillow. In addition, Margaret partnered with many Silicon Valley venture capital firms to advise their portfolios through periods of hyper-growth. Prior to Rich Talent Group, Margaret was part of Russell Reynold's Consumer Digital Media Practice. Margaret graduated from Hamilton College with a BA in Government.
Ugo Di Girolamo
Co-Founder & Principal Engineer
Prior to Compass Ugo was the Engineering Lead at Twitter. Before Twitter, Ugo worked at Julpan, where he spent most of his time thinking about the best ways to build scalable, reliable and easily extensible systems. Before Julpan, Ugo gained experience in architecting and implementing high performance applications at Google - where he worked in the Infrastructure team and in the Search Quality team - and before that at GE Homeland Security. Ugo holds a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from University "La Sapienza" of Rome.
Head of People Programs
Varsha is an HR leader with over 20 years of HR leadership experience in companies such as Lyft, McDonalds, and Deloitte. Her focus is on program strategy and development for compensation, benefits, learning & development, people analytics, onboarding, inclusion & diversity, and culture & engagement. Varsha has a Masters in Taxation from George Washington University and a BBA in Accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington.
With almost two decades of experience, Leonard is recognized as one of New York’s leading residential real estate authorities. The Leonard Steinberg Team is ranked consistently in the Top Ten Broker Teams in the United States by the Wall Street Journal and has been responsible for well over $2 billion in residential transactions. He has served as a marketing agent and consultant on some of New York’s most iconic developments, including 150 Charles Street, 200 Eleventh Avenue and 54 Bond Street. Previously, he owned a fashion company and was a fashion designer at Christian Dior America. Leonard is a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker.
Chief Growth Officer
Rob joined Compass from management consulting at McKinsey & Company in New York City, where he was primarily focused on devising growth strategies in legacy industries through technology and data innovations. Rob has been named one of Forbes 30 Under 30, was ranked #27 on the T360 list of the 200 most influential people in residential real estate, and graduated summa cum laude from Duke University. Outside of work, Rob has worked on social enterprise initiatives on every continent, with a passion for public private partnerships to drive poverty alleviation.
Deputy COO & General Counsel
Prior to Compass David was the General Counsel, and ultimately the Co-CEO, of the U.S. parent company of the Würth Group, one of the world’s largest assembly-component distributors, operating in 84 countries. He also served as the Chief Operating Officer of Würth’s U.S. real estate corporation. Previously, he worked as an EVP and General Counsel of Capital Properties, a real estate investment and development firm focused on multifamily, office, retail and resort-hotel assets in major metropolitan markets. He received his M.B.A. from NYU and his J.D. from the University of Virginia. Outside of work, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the AHRC Foundation. David is an Individual Broker licensed as David J Carp.
Chief Revenue Officer
Matt joins Compass from Eventbrite, the world’s largest event technology platform, where as Chief Revenue Officer and Head of Ticketing and Registration, he oversaw global revenue acquisition and retention, customer support, and marketing. Prior to Eventbrite, Matt was the global sales leader for ServiceSource International where he helped build the business from its early days through its IPO. Matt has a BA from Indiana University and a JD from the Northwestern University School of Law. Matt is married, has three children, and lives in Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Chief Creative Officer
Matt Spangler, Chief Creative Officer of Compass. Prior to Compass he spent three years of building the creative group at Tribeca Enterprises. He oversaw the creation of various projects including responsive sites, new ticketing platforms, documentary films and TV series fully funded by brands, YouTube channels, Film Festival campaigns and digital product development for the “Tribeca Shortlist” SVOD platform. After working his way up the East Coast from Atlanta, he's owned his own creative agencies, brought the original Daily Show online at Comedy Central, built the first branded content program for mobile social innovator Dodgeball and founded an underground creative “fight-club” that hosted secret competitions with architects, dancers, fashion designers and beyond.
