About Elissa
Elissa Shapiro is a licensed Realtor in Maryland, DC and Virginia. She specializes in helping clients buy and sell modern and mid-century modern homes along with her Realtor husband Michael Shapiro, also with Compass, and the founder of the popular Modern Capital blog and website. It was the rise in popularity and demand that drove Elissa to help on the backend of operations and eventually become a licensed agent to assist the many mid century modern enthusiasts that seek out Michael’s expertise.
With her B.B.A. in Accounting and 25 years of financial experience, Elissa is an expert on the numbers side of real estate, managing rental properties and overseeing all financial aspects of major house renovation projects. Before beginning her career in real estate, Elissa was a controller for a major non-profit foundation and held corporate accounting positions, including at PageNet, one of the leading paging companies at the time.
From her experience managing properties and keeping watch on the renovation budgets, Elissa has a special eye for knowing how to manage property improvements, where to get the most value in remodeling and how to examine the numbers as buyers plan a major investment in a new home. She finds it a great honor and privilege to help clients find a home they love, and she is known to become a first friend to people new to the area and is proud to welcome them and help them find connections within the community.
Elissa is a proud supporter of Docomomo-US, the D.C. Preservation League, the National Building Museum, and the biennial Hollin Hills and Garden Tour. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and Italian greyhound. She volunteers with her dog visiting students at schools, libraries, and sick people in hospitals and rehabilitation centers.
Elissa was raised in southern New Jersey and has also lived in Northern Virginia. Since 2005, she has lived in Bethesda, Maryland with her husband and two children.
