About Philip

Philip Matyas is an Associate Broker with The Shannon Group at Compass, bringing three decades of distinguished real estate experience to clients across Northern Virginia. Licensed as a Virginia Real Estate Broker since 2002 and affiliated with Compass since 2019, Philip is known for his disciplined approach, creative and strategic insight, and unwavering commitment to service and success.

He serves a diverse range of clients, from luxury and historic properties in Old Town Alexandria, Arlington, and Mount Vernon, to the high-tech corridors of Northern Virginia. As a longtime resident and homeowner in Historic Old Town, Philip offers in-depth, local expertise and a unique, first hand understanding of both property and place.

Philip's professional foundation is rooted in leadership and service. A graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, he retired as a Lieutenant Commander after a distinguished Coast Guard career that included service at The White House while, concurrently, being director of national advertising for the Coast Guard. He also held the position of Commanding Officer of an isolated Alaskan duty station and Public Affairs Officer for the Great Lakes Ninth Coast Guard District, where he additionally served as Admiral's Aide. He holds a Master's degree in Public Relations from the University of Southern California and has completed advanced negotiation training through Harvard University.

Following his military career, Philip worked with home developers in the building and sales of new home communities in Northern Virginia. Combining decades of experience with current NVAR Broker expertise, Philip remains at the forefront of contract strategy, risk mitigation, and negotiation in all facets of residential real estate, including tax-differed 1031 Starker Exchanges for investment properties.

Known for his meticulous attention to detail and proactive approach, Philip anticipates challenges before they arise, guiding clients through complex transactions with clarity and confidence. In a market where timing and precision are critical, his presence as an Associate Broker brings an added layer of expertise to The Shannon Group, helping to ensure client success.
