I started in real estate before I was married or had kids. I had a life-changing realtor, Don, who encouraged me out of buying a condo and into a duplex in San Francisco. My husband and I then converted that duplex into a triplex, learning every detail of the process—from permits to property management—and kept it as a rental income property when we moved our family of four to my husband’s home town, Mill Valley.
That first investment opened my eyes to the power of real estate as a wealth-building tool. In Mill Valley, we purchased our primary home with a legal 2-bedroom, 1-bath unit in the yard (before ADUs were even a thing), and we’ve since expanded our portfolio to include multiple units across Mill Valley and the Bay Area. Through it all, I managed these properties myself—balancing real estate alongside careers as a technical writer, teacher, mother, and award-winning author.
