Prior to FDR's Rural Electrification Act of 1936, growing electric utility companies were not required to make electricity available to remote areas of the United States, but were allowed to concentrate on more profitable urban enterprises. To try to stay up to speed with the growth of domestic technology in the country, the farmers and watermen of Southern Maryland -- like farmers across the country -- purchased small direct current DC generators from companies including Delco -Detroit Electric which could charge and maintain a rack of batteries that provided limited 32 volt DC electric light and household appliances for farmhouses. In Southern Maryland, these miniature Delco-Light powerplants were often housed in eight foot-square, green triangular-roofed clapboard outbuildings which came to be known, generically, as Delco Houses. Only a few of these buildings remain in St. Marys County. This Delco House represents a slice of history from the first half of the twentieth century, which gave our farmers and watermens families a taste of the fast growing technology that we take for granted today.
