This body of land is located in Arvon Township, in north-central Baraga County, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This boreal ecosystem is bounded by the Keweenaw Bay on the west and the Huron Bay on the east. Considered a very special place by the Ojibwa who fished, hunted, and camped here for generations, it remained mostly untouched until the late 1800s. Forked trees located along Point Abbaye Road may be Ojibwa trail or site markers. Point Abbaye has several Indian sites along the point and it was common to mark them by bending trees. The Hebard and Thurberg Lumber Company leased the peninsula in 1877 and began harvesting its old growth forests, and carrying the logs to the nearby sawmills at Pequaming. Today the thickly wooded second-growth forests are managed for production of pulpwood, and the shoreline is dotted with fine private homes andcottages, and vacant land parcels. The northern end of the Peninsula has Copper Country State Forest lands and the County ofBaraga has a beautiful park which is located at the rugged, rocky tip. It’s only about a 4-5 mile drive over the twisty road from theproperty offered for sale to get there, but the view from the rugged sandstone shelf there is worth the drive! There are hiking trails, twoouthouses, and a small campground for overnight camping. You might be able to see The Huron Island Light flashing from the rockyfreshwater archipelago located about seven miles beyond the end of the peninsula. These islands are named the Huron Islands in honorof the Hurons who once lived in the area - and are a national wildlife area. The ancient Lake Superior sea beds have created someshear bluffs with high overlooks on both sides of the peninsula And each side has its own special features. There are stunning sunset...
