The History of Camp Woods
Camp Woods was built between 1910 and 1912 as the country residence of James M. Willcox, an aristocratic banker and president of the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society.
The estate was designed by Gold Medal–winning architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. While most of his work was concentrated in the Lake Forest area of Illinois, Camp Woods stands as his only known residential commission on the East Coast and has been described as one of his finest works.
The principal exterior material is tan brick, typical of Shaw’s country houses. The front entry features Roman Doric columns and a Doric cornice, a stylistic preference of Shaw. Camp Woods originally sat on a larger tract of land. Today, more than four acres of the original grounds and gardens remain with the house. The surrounding acreage has since been developed into estate properties, yet Camp Woods maintains a strong sense of privacy and prominence within its neighborhood.
The land itself predates the residence in historical importance. Situated on one of the highest points of Radnor Township, the property served as a two-hundred-man outpost during the winter encampment at Valley Forge, thus its name.
William Donner acquired the property after James Willcox, and a wedding reception was held at Camp Woods when his daughter, Betsy, married Franklin Roosevelt’s son, Elliott.
The residence is in an excellent state of preservation. With the exception of certain service and utility areas, the home retains its original architectural integrity. Camp Woods is an exceptional home on a well-landscaped private property in the highly sought-after Radnor School District.
