This structure seems thin and light partly because Architect, Haywood Newkirk and builder, Fred Murray, used structural steel in supporting the house and roof. The wind uplift tie rods tying the roof structure to the foundation are exposed on the exterior. The rods are thin vertical lines having almost no impact on the view from the living spaces. The roof slope and ceiling, lifting up towards the south are set at the best angle to allow winter sun, which is low in the southern sky, to pour in from the south. The roof projects well past the glass on the south and shields the glass in summer when the sun's angle is high. The living room, kitchen-dining space is separated from the bedroom wing by 1051 sq. ft. of open air decking that extends the south and west side of the living room, providing privacy between the bedroom wing and the main living area. It also provides a good natural ventilation characteristic.
