At the time, the area was known as “Ellicott’s Mills.” All four homes were originally owned by Steven and Sarah Hillsinger, proprietors of what was then Ellicott Mills' only funeral parlor, formerly located on the site of the Howard County Welcome Center, which was the former town Post Office. Eventually the Hillsingers’ business was passed to a family member who renamed it Mac Nabb Funeral Home. Mac Nabb still operates in nearby Catonsville, only a few miles from the family’s original homestead in Ellicott City. The home is a wood frame, folk-style Victorian. Homes like this were the typical “worker village homes” in older mill towns like Ellicott's Mills. Homes such as these are considered “historically significant being associated with the growth and prosperity of the Frederick Turnpike, (Frederick Road), The old National Road from which goods such as tobacco and wheat transformed this region’s economy.” Simple and straight forward with modest flourishes indicative of the Victorian era, these were homes used by generations of families in the area that built the boom town of Ellicott City. Tucked into the hills behind the home and across the stream are one of the older graveyards in the area: the final resting place of over 100 souls mostly from Ireland, who built the railroads and industry that Ellicott’s Mills were known for. In 2005, a group led by an Eagle Scout from Historic Ellicott City’s own St. Paul’s Church spent over 300 hours clearing brush and marking grave locations and restoring the headstones. Inside, much of the original window moulding and trim has been preserved as a nod to the past with thoughtfully placed updated finishes throughout the home.
