In winter, the Forest welcomes cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. About a mile+ north of the property is access to the 440,000-Acre Copper County State Forest Lands. The State manages these lands for reforestation. But in addition to pulpwood logging, this land is open to the public for recreation, such as camping, fishing, and hunting. Black bear, Ruffed grouse, and Whitetail deer hunting is very popular in this area. About a half-mile away is the West Branch of the Sturgeon River. The Sturgeon, a 106 mile long river, discharges itself into Portage Lake and, ultimately, into Lake Superior. The Wild and Scenic portion of the Sturgeon River, within the Ottawa National Forest, is classified as a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream. About three-miles due north of the property is the Otter Falls on the Otter River. The stream length of the Otter, including the North Branch and West Branches is 50.9 miles. The West Branch is about 6.2 miles long. The West Branch is a class II(IV) (Difficult) section of whitewater. A two+ mile drive west of the property brings you to Pike Lake Road. If you go up the road about two miles, and launch your canoe on the Otter, you will find one of a few paddling sections in this river system, and get out at the Hazel Swamp Road. This stretch has enough mileage, to be perfect for a one day trip. The Pike Lake Road river crossing is also an historic fish stocking site. The river supports a fair brook trout fishery and steelhead also ascend it. The best brook trout fishing is found downstream! There are caddis hatches on this stream, however most of it is not open enough for pleasant fly fishing. Local anglers are predominately bait fishermen and because of the clarity of the water they are most successful during and after periods of rainfall and high water. Brook trout up to 10 inches are common, and a few brookies over 14 inches are also caught. Bruno Creek, Lake Fifteen Creek and the outlet of Pike Lake are the main tributaries to the West Branch; they have extensive areas of spawning riffles and abundant cover for young trout. Some legal sized brook trout also inhabit these streams but due to limited access and overabundant cover, they receive little fishing pressure. There is access to the main North-South Winona-Alston Multiall-season Trail No. 109 less than a quarter mile from the parcel, for some great ATV riding, biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling.
