The ADUs both face the alley providing a sense of separation from the homes, while still allowing camaraderie between them. The Maple ADU was inspired by the colorful beach and jungle towns along the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The vibrancy of patterns and natural textures found in the Yucatan are complimentary to Austin's dynamic Eastside. The semi-private front yard is screened by a terracotta breeze-block wall that becomes an extension of the living room, as accessed through the impressive Western doors. The concrete floors are a product of a custom aggregate mix creating a unique terrazzo look. A chef's kitchen, features black stainless Kitchenaid appliances. Custom, locally made cabinets play off the rich colors found in the jungle foliage, while the soapstone countertop waterfalls down into a black floor tile that runs through the casita like an underground cenote. For the primary bath, walnut cabinets featuring cane infill are topped with white quartzite and handmade concrete vessel sinks. A soft green cement tile wraps the floor and vanity backsplash, while the dynamic shower tile is reminiscent of Mayan fabrics and patterns. In the second bathroom, black plumbing fixtures and floor tile fade into the background to highlight the custom white soapstone sink and countertop wrapped in grain-matched walnut. A rich wood deck off the primary offers a private space to relax with a morning coffee or an evening mojito. Walk a couple of blocks to Nixta (James Beard award winner), Birdie's (NY Times, Bon Appetite, Esquire), Cork and Screw, Vic and Al's, and many more.
