The house has a storied history. Located on the site of the former Francis Dodge family mansion, 3070 Q was built in its place after the Dodge mansion was torn down in 1893. Francis Dodge was a shipping magnate and the richest man in Georgetown at the time of his death.

The first occupant of the house was George Washington Ball, the great grandnephew of President George Washington and the great grandson of George Mason of Gunston Hall. His wife, Mary Beverley Randolph, was first cousin to Robert E. Lee and related to Thomas Jefferson.
