Kevin is a serial entrepreneur with 20+ years of experience in business development, marketing, operations, and finance with early to mid-stage consumer, media, and technology companies. He has a demonstrated track record in leadership, strategic relations, marketing, sourcing capital, and building companies. He enjoys attracting and motivating productive teams, collaborating with industry leading partners, and executing clear strategic plans. He is skilled at establishing, cultivating, and managing client and investor relationships and has led more than 1,000+ early-mid stage investor presentations and corporate road shows, resulting in more than $60M in funding to date.
Prior to his role at Compass, Kevin spent 14 years as president and CEO of a leading R&D nanotechnology company, QuantumSphere, Inc. (QSI), where his team developed and patented award-winning products with applications in electro-chemical energy storage (batteries and fuel cells) and thermo-electro catalysis applications (high efficiency chemical production, such as hydrogen and ammonia). He led marketing, operations, R&D and commercialization strategies that secured brand name global partners and managed investor relations and corporate communications initiatives that resulted in significant company/product exposure and ~$35M in funding. In 2014, he led QSI in a merger with a publicly traded company, and in 2017 he led the sale of the company's chemical patent portfolio to a publicly traded oil and gas company.
Kevin was also a co-founder in a development stage social network technology company whose intellectual property was acquired by a publicly traded company in 2012, 18 months after inception. In 2015, he founded a fin-tech company, EquityBender, a FINRA approved (Title III Reg CF) crowdfunding portal designed to facilitate the connection process between entrepreneurs seeking to raise capital and investors interested in backing early-stage companies. In September 2018, he led the sale of EquityBender to an East Coast alternative asset manager. In 2017, Kevin Co-Founded the International Executive Council (IEC), a monthly business networking group focused on innovation, growth, and impact. He is also an investor and advisor to an early stage e-sports technology platform and a blockchain security and transactions start-up.
Prior to QSI, Kevin was Vice President of Institutional Sales and Marketing at Fortune 500 company, First American Corp. (NYSE:FAF), working in the Capital Management Division. Previously, Mr. Maloney served as Principal and Compliance Officer at Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO), an institutional investment advisory firm with more than $1.5 trillion in assets under management. While at PIMCO, he held FINRA Series 7, 26, 63 and 65 securities licenses and managed the day-to-day compliance aspects of the firm's registered reps.
After college, Mr. Maloney combined lifelong passions for health, fitness and marketing, and co-founded a health food company that created a "Ready-to-Blend" all-natural fruit smoothie product, which grew into a leading pre-packaged solution for convenient, healthy, freshly blended beverages on-the-go. More than 10 million units were sold nationally before the company was acquired.
Mr. Maloney has been involved with 12 start-ups, either as a co-founder, executive, or early investor, and has consulted with and successfully raised tens of millions in capital for numerous private equity and public transactions. These transactions range from bio-tech, clean tech, chemicals and batteries to software, social media, mobile applications, education, fin-tech, ed-tech, sports, health food, and real estate. He has extensive public, private, and non-profit board experience and most recently held a regional board seat for Gen Next, an organization focused on economic growth, education, and national security; and previously held board seats at OC Boy Scouts and OC YMCA. He is also a member of the Angel Capital Association (ACA) and sits on the Advisory Committee for the Internet Marketing Association (IMA), which has attracted more than 1M global professional members. Mr. Maloney was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and Young President's Organization (YPO) and has been awarded several U.S. patents. He is passionate about promoting social emotional learning and teaching emotional intelligence to elementary school kids with a goal of ending school violence. He earned his B.A. from the University of California, Irvine and an MBA from Pepperdine University. He resides in Corona Del Mar with his wife and two young children and enjoys mtn biking, beach volleyball, boating, and a wide range of other outdoor activities.
