Named for the beautiful gardens that originally surrounded the first home, the estate was initially owned by Charles H. Smith, known by his pen name, Bill Arp. During the Civil War, the original home was occupied by Union officers and was ground zero for the planning of Gen. Sherman’s March to the Sea. A famous photo of Sherman’s officers sitting around a dining table beside an oak sapling was taken just outside in the front yard. The sprawling Southern estate was later subdivided. One home constructed two doors down belonged to the Rev. Samuel Axson. His daughter, Ellen, would later marry Woodrow Wilson and become First Lady. Among her accomplishments was the creation of the famous Rose Garden at the White House. One can only speculate if she drew her inspiration from the gardens of Rose Hill.
