A trusted figure in John Adams’ Federalist circle, Marbury served in key financial and civic roles in the capital’s infancy. His legal battle in Marbury v. Purchased in late 1957, 3307 N Street was the couple’s first owned home in the city.  It was a setting for young family life and rising national political ambitions. Their daughter Caroline and, in 1960, John F. Kennedy Jr. were born during this period. Jacqueline who possessed a discerning aesthete, reimagined the interiors several times by shaping the double living room into a warm, polished salon where she hosted “political teas” and small gatherings that subtly advanced her husband’s presidential prospects. During the 1960 campaign and transition, the townhouse became an informal nerve center. Advisors came and went through the gracious doorway; decisions about Cabinet appointees were considered in the front rooms; and, on winter mornings, the President-elect stepped onto the porch to share announcements with the press gathered along the brick sidewalks. On January 20, 1961, John and Jacqueline Kennedy departed this door for inaugural ceremonies. An indelible moment that fixed the house in the nation’s visual memory. Soon after, the property returned to private stewardship and it’s essential character preserved.
