The Willson's did the initial construction on the site as well as a "progression of additions". His descendants are credited with playing many key roles in planting Quakerism and cultivating an anti-slavery movement which included helping Harriett Tubman to escape to freedom. Colonel Richard Carter acquired the property in 1860. Carter, a Commissioned Colonel and State Senator, became an Advisor to President Polk and consolidated the buildings into a single consolidated living space. Captain Quentin R. Walsh became the third owner in 1963. Captain Walsh, a recipient of the Navy Cross in World War II, has the first U. S. Navy warship named for a Coast Guard Officer, the U. S. S. Walsh, was a man of extraordinary courage and diverse accomplishments. He captured enemy strongholds, saved ships and saved the whales by playing a key role in banning U.
