Alwyn Court, built in 1909, was designed by the architects Harde & Short in the style of King Francis I, the great art patron of Renaissance France. Its lavish facade features glazed terra cotta ornamentation in the form of cherubs, flowers, plants and animals, including the King’s royal symbol, fire-breathing crowned salamanders. In the 1980’s, the central courtyard was transformed by the illusionist painter Richard Haas into a spectacular atrium with a trompe l’oeil design mimicking the look of stonework. Alwyn Court has New York Landmark status and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, Alwyn Court is an elegant, white glove building, with a 24-hour doorman and a resident manager. The building allows pied-a-terres and purchase by foreign buyers. Pets are permitted with approval as are washer/dryers.
